What is Aromatherapy?
We are often mislead by clever marketing as to what aromatherapy and aromatic prescribing actually is and how it can benefit your health.
It is virtually impossible to explain in just one page what aromatherapy really is and the positive impact they can have on our body and our body's reactions.
Briefly here is some information for you:
Although our sense of smell still remains somewhat a mystery there are three stages that are known in relation to the body’s response:-
Reception: An aroma is merely a molecule floating in the air. When we inhale this molecule/s it binds with receptors located in the upper portion of the nasal cavity.
Transmission: Receptor cells then send nerve impulses that are conveyed to the olfactory bulb located deep within the brain aka the “limbic system”. Among other things the limbic system is the seat of our memories and emotions which is why smell has a profound effect on memory recall.
Perception: Impulses are passed onto the hypothalamus (the control station for the pituitary gland). The pituitary gland on cue from the hypothalamus, will release its chemical hormones into the bloodstream (internal regulator) thus controlling all other endocrine glands.
Essential oils have a profound impact on us physically and emotionally......we know the "benefits of massage" imagine massage combined with essential oils. Many of your traditional muscle rubs contain essential oils or components that have been recreated with synthetics to match the chemical structure of an essential oil and other coded ingredients. Why not not cut out the fake stuff and go for a pure blend of oils?
Of course there are many applications and ways to use essential oils. Certain ailments call for different oils and applications. Professional advice from an aromatherapist is recommended if you seek a therapeutic outcome for a specific ailment.
Unfortunately most commercial branded “aromatherapy products” have put the science of aromatherapy in a bad light. Aromatherapy is not just sniffing oils or burning candles! It is about the chemical composition of each essential oil and it's influence and reaction with the human body. The respiratory system is one that can greatly benefit from essential oils. Remember being sick with a cold and flu and your mum or grandma preparing a steaming bowl of eucalyptus and throwing a towel over your head....followed by a eucalyptus hanky under the pillow before bed? I do! Freshly squeezed lemon juice and a tablespoon of honey for a sore throat? Simple natural remedies instead of cheap (and nasty) mass produced synthetic versions that we find in abundance on a pharmacy shelf.
Synthetic style "aromatherapy" on the supermarket shelves have no benefits. Products such as toilet sprays as an example....... If you are going to invite airborne visitors, why not invite the ones who can have many positive effects? Using essential oils in a burner or a simple room spray can cleanse the air and act as an extremely effective anti-bacterial aid. There is a long list of highly anti-bacterial essential oils that can naturally cleanse the air, positively affect your mood and deliver positive effects as it enters the body via olfaction.......PLUS the house smells pleasantly inviting! There are no negatives.
Essential oils can also have a profound effect on memory, mood and emotion. Stress and anxiety is a major problem in this day and age. Essential oils and their relationship with olfaction can have a great positive influence in our day to day lives.
See the illustrated pathway indicating how essential oils are absorbed into the bloodstream, their role including the relationship between olfaction, memory, emotion and mood.
